Elkader Register, Thur., 10 Apr. 1890. Monona Matters column.
On Thursday of last week our esteemed friend, A. M. Cortis was laid to rest. The ceremonies were held at the Congregational church, Rev. Young officiating, and despite the continual pouring down of rain the church was crowded. He was buried according to the Masonic service, having been for many years a member of Clayton lodge, No. 70, of Monona. Mr. Cortis was born in Windham county, Conn., Dec 29th, 1818, and came to Clayton county in 1853, residing here ever since and for the most of the time engaged in the mercantile business. He was ever regarded as a just and upright man.
