Elkader Register, Thur., 12 Feb. 1920.
Dorothea Fraemke was born at Langendorf, Hanover, Germany, on May the 1st, 1867. Her childhood and school days were spent at the place of her birth and there she was also confirmed in the St. John's church on Palm Sunday, April 10, 1881.
In 1890 she came to this country and was married the same year to Henry Behn, at that time a resident of Cox Creek township, but having come from her home country a number of years previous. Three children were born to this union.
Hard work and wise economy were visibly rewarded with prosperity.
On April 13, 1914, the family sustainted (sustained) a great loss, when the husband and father passed away after an illness of several months. It was now up to the mother and children to look after the various duties of the farm-life, but they performed the same in an admirable and commendable way. It is true, there were times when the mother worked too hard, as will readily be admitted by all who knew her, but she would not complain.
For some time her sons George and Henry were planning to start out farming for themselves, which would have relieved the mother of the hard work she had been doing, but she was not privileged to see the realization of these plans.
For several months Mrs. Behn was not in her usual good health and spirit. Children and friends would occasionally urge her to consult a doctor, which she finally did. There were times when it seemed that her strong constitution would win out. The children were very fortunate in getting a good trained nurse, and all that filial love and skill were able to do, was indeed done, but to no avail. The days of her years here on earth were counted. The Heavenly Father, in whom she trusted with a childlike faith, called her out of this world of trouble and affliction to everlasting rest and peace on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 1920 at 8:30 o'clock in the morning, at the age of 52 years, 8 months and 20 days.
The departure of a good and dear mother is mourned by the three children: George, Emma and Henry. The Evangelical church and "Frauen-Verein" has lost an active and faithful member; the many friends and neighbors will sadly miss her as one who was ever willing and ready to assist in times of need.
Funeral services were held at the Ev. church on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 8th, Rev. Franke officiating. The Frauen-Verein attended in a body. Interment was made in the East Side cemetery.
