Fredericka Mary Kluss, second child of Mr. and Mrs. John Kluss, was born in Mecklenberg, Germany, on September 30th, 1850, and departed from this life March 20th, 1916, aged 65 years, 4 months and 20 days. At the age of three years, she, in company with her parents, moved to Garnavillo, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood. On January 29th, 1870, she was united in marriage to John Henry Heins by Rev. A. Herrmann, at Garnavillo. They lived there about four years, when they moved to a farm they purchased just south of Luana. They remained on this farm until too feeble to carry on the farm work, then purchased the home in Luana they have since occupied.
Nine children blessed this union, three of whom preceded the mother to the home beyond - a son in infancy; Ed, on October 4th, 1914; and Ella, Mrs. Albert Voelzke, December 3rd, 1915. Those left to mourn are her husband and John Heins and family, of Castalia; Julius and wife, of Postville; Mrs. Amelia Roth and family, Mrs. Emma Lubhers and family and Albert Voelzke and son, of Monona; Mrs. Ed Heins, of Minneapolis; Mrs. Louise Lindroth and family, of Luana, and Miss Sophie, at home.
At about the age of 13 years she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Garnavillo and has since been an active worker in the church. The flower-bearers were members of the frauen Verein, of which she was a member.
The pall bearers were Messrs. Herman Rekow, Fred Splies, Fred Palas, Henry Palas, Fred Kamps and Wm. Landt, Sr.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon in the Lutheran church, Rev. Westenberger in charge. Interment in the family lot in the Luana cemetery.
She was ill about five weeks with pneumonia, which caused her death after terrible suffering. She was a loving wife, a loving mother and a kind neighbor, always willing to lend a helping hand to all in need.
