Mary Hageman 1822 - 1881

Mrs John Hegeman died Sunday night, at the advanced age of 50 years. Mrs. Hegeman was a highly respected lady, and leaves many friends to mourn her death. She was buried Tuesday in the Pilkington cemetery.

Submitter note: Spelling of the surname and given age at death are thought to be newspaper errors. She is thought to be the Mary Hageman, 1822 - 24 Apr. 1881, that is shown on WPA records as buried in Mt. Harmony Cemetery, Elk Township.

County Coordinator notes: On Ancestry, in the Iowa Death Records, is John Hageman, widower, age 83, born 1815, died 12/18/1898. The WPA record for him has an incorrect DOB of 1875. The death record doesn't name a cemetery, only says Elk township, but WPA puts him in Mt. Harmony.

The 1880 census, Elk twp. has John Hageman, age 66 & and his wife Mary, age 61. By the 1885 state census, John has been widowed.

As for the name of the cemetery given in the paper, it's very possible that at one time there was a Pilkington family cemetery or family lot that was absorbed into the larger Mt. Harmony Cemetery.
