MRS. WM. HENRY
Mary Ellen Stence Henry died Jan. 28 at 4 o’clock a. m. at the family residence here in Elkader.
Mrs. Henry was born April 6, 1869, in Boardman township. Many of her youthful years were spent in teaching school, the latter years in LaVerne, Minn. About 12 years ago she and Mr. Henry retired from their farm in Cox Creek township and moved to Elkader, where they have made their home ever since.
Mrs. Henry was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic church, Elkader. She was an active member of the Christian Mothers and Daughters society, Lady Foresters, and the Third Order of St. Francis.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 9:30 o’clock from the family residence to the St. Joseph’s Catholic church at 10 o’clock. The Very Rev. Father Taken officiated throughout the services. Burial was made in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Mrs. Henry is survived by her husband, Wm. Henry, four sisters, Sr. M. Regis, Presentation convent, Fairbank, Iowa; Mrs. Mary O’Brien, Strawberry Point; Mrs. Anna Wiley, Littleport, and Mrs. Kathryn Crary, St. Olaf; two brothers, Michael Stence, Elkport, and Martin Stence, Elkader, besides a host of relatives and friends.
Casket bearers were all nephews of Mrs. Henry, George O’Brien, Marcis O’Brien, John O’Brien, John Wiley, John Stence and John Dinan.
Transcriber’s addendum: The information in this obituary is confusing. I remember that my father’s Uncle Bill (William Henry) was married to ‘Ella’ Stence. In this obituary the name ‘Ella’ is not mentioned; Mary Ellen is used instead. This obituary states that her birth date was April 6, 1869. In the Alexander and Anna Marie Henry Family Bible there is an entry "M Ellen Stence Born April 6, 1968." It is my understanding that this entry is in Aunt Ella’s handwriting. The Henry Bible has an entry in the MARRIAGES section "Nov. 23-1909. William A. Henry to Ella M. Stence. I think that we can conclude that Mary Ellen, Ella M. and Ella are all one and the same person. I do not know what year she died, however. She was an older sister of Mary V. Stence O’Brien. In all cases I try to stick to the spelling and usage I find in the newspaper clippings, such as the incorrect spelling of my father above! Marcis should read Marcus O’Brien!
