MRS. ROBERT P. HENRY

The death of Mrs. Henry was mentioned last week and it was with sadness profound we write of her life, so soon cut short from its useful and inspiring years.

Amelia Dohrer was born and reared in Osborne from which place in her girlhood days she removed with her parents to Elkader. A year and a half ago she was united in marriage with Robert P. Henry, and to them was accorded a happiness and congeniality beyond the ordinary. A babe came to brighten the home a week ago Monday but as the mother gave life so was it taken from her and Monday evening an all wise and all just Father called her home, the little one living until Tuesday morning when it too winged its flight to the land immortal. The funeral service was held Wednesday morning in Sacred Heart church Rev. Father Rowe officiating and interment was made in Cox Creek Cemetery.

Mrs. Henry was a sweet womanly woman, one whom it will always be an honor to have known and to the young husband and other relatives the sympathy of the entire community is extended in such great a loss. To those who die in the Lord, there is no death.

The correct death year is 1901, as shown by the following death notices/obits.

Elkader Argus, Wed., 5 Jun. 1901. Volga column.

Monday evening Mrs. Rob. Henry, living south of town, departed this life, leaving a sweet little boy only a few hours old, who lived until morning and then went to be with the mother leaving the husband almost frantic with grief.

As Miss Amelia Dohrer she had a large circle of acquaintances who loved her for her sweet and refined ways and as Mrs. Henry, a large circle of relatives, friends and neighbors mourn with her aged father and mother and her husband on so sad a death. The funeral occurred Wednesday at the Catholic church on Cox Creek, Father Rowe officiating.

Elkader Register, Thur., 6 Jun. 1901. Volga City Views column.

Mrs. Emelia (Dohrer) Henry was born August 13th, 1865, at the old homestead in Cox Creek township, and died at her home near Volga, Monday evening, June 3rd, 1901, at seven o'clock. Her death was sudden and a shock to both relatives and friends. She was a faithful wife and had gained the love of all by her always kind and loving disposition, and loving hands worked faithfully for her recovery but it seemed she must go.

She was married to Robert P. Henry Jan. 21st, 1900. She leaves a sorrowful husband, an aged father and mother, two brothers, Henry at the old home, and Will employed as engine inspector at Oelwein, and two sisters, Mrs. Martin Dittmer and Mrs. Henry Lemke, both of Elkader.

The funeral was held at Cox Creek Wednesday morning at 10:30, Solemn High Mass being celebrated at that hour, Rev. Father Rowe officiating. Many were the friends and neighbors who paid their last respects to the memory of the departed. May she rest in peace.

------------

(Note: WPA records list her as Emelie Henry, 1865 / 3 June 1901, buried in Strawberry Point Cemetery. The IGPP shows her gravestone where she is listed as Emilia M. Henry, buried in the St. Mary's section of Strawberry Point Cemetery.)
