Franks, Ida Bell (Smith) Groth 1895-1972

Ida Bell Franks was born to parents Mary and Samuel Smith on October 5, 1895 near Garber, Iowa. She attended rural schools of Clayton County.

On July 2, 1913, she was united in marriage to Charles Henry Groth, who was employed by the United Steel Construction Company. To this union were born two sons. Charles passed away February 17, 1920.

Ida was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Elkport on March 20, 1921. She married Amos Franks at Elkader, Iowa on Dec. 7, 1927. To this union were born two sons and one daughter.

The family spent most of their life farming in Clayton County. Due to failing health, she and Amos moved to Oelwein in 1968, to make their home with their son, Owen. Her health failed considerably, and year ago she was moved to Quam's Custodial Home, in Oelwein. She was taken from there on October 16 to Mercy Hopsital in Oelwein, where she passed away at 3:15 p.m. on November 4, 1972.

She was preceded in death by both her husbands, one daughter, Charlida, two sisters, Ruby and Iowa, and one brother Wincy. She is survived by four sons, Alfred Groth of Woodridge, Illinois, Virgil Groth of Artesia, California, Richard and Owen Franks both of Oelwein, eleven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, two sisters, Hattie (Mrs Palmer Hansel)of Edgewood, Iowa, and Margaret (Mrs. Walter Ortman) of Charles City and five brothers, Huston of Oelwein, Ernest of Guttenberg, George of Santa Rosa, California, John of Gateway, Colorado and Wayne of Edgewood, Iowa.

Memorial services were held from Immanuel Lutheran Church at Elkport. Internment at Mt. Harmony Cemetery.
