Claude A. Powell, 78, of Elkader died unexpectedly at his home Sunday morning, Dec. 27, 1981. He was the father of Dr. Kent Powell of Guttenberg.

Services were conducted by the Rev. Ted B. Newton at Peace United Church of Christ at 11 a.m. Tuesday with burial in East Side Cemetery, Elkader. Casket bearers were Valdean Palas, Meryl Honn, Russell Pate, Roger Honn and Grant Miller. Honorary pallbearers were John Wildman, Floyd Tesreau, W. C. Fenton, Clarence Woods, Melvin Glesne, Ben O'Meara and Glen Gifford.

The Witt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Powell was the son of William and Anna Foster Powell and was born in Downing, Mo., Jan. 30, 1903. He was married to the former Laura Honn, who survives. Mr. Powell was a depot agent in Elkader for many years, retiring in 1971.

Surviving besides his wife and son are a daughter, Mrs. David (Cheryl) Heltne of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren; two brothers, Clell Powell of Canoga Park, Calif., and J. R. Powell of Durham, Okla.; and two sisters, Mrs. Marie Beaty of Cheyenne, Okla., and Mrs. Laura Park of Durham, Okla.
