Solomon Bowers was born in Tuscarouis County, Ohio, July 6, 1820 and died at his home near Wood, Iowa, April 7, 1905, aged 84 years, 9 months and 1 day.
He was united in marriage to Miss Susan Lawver July 5, 1843 who died January 22, 1892.
To them were born nine children, six sons and three daughters. All but one remain to mourn the loss of a kind and truthful parent. They are: Mrs. Mary Chesley and John L. of Hopkinton, Iowa; I.A. Bowers of Strawberry Point; Mrs. Sarah A. Kyler of Wood, Iowa, Mrs. Margret J. Halsted of Arlington, Iowa; D. T. Bowers of Hopkinton, Iowa; B. F. Bowers of Elkport, Iowa, and I. N. Bowers of Strawberry Point.
There are also three sisters, Mrs. Susan Hoover of Nance County, Nebraska; Mrs. Catherine Grim of Walnut Grove, Nebraska and Mrs. McCurdy of Pleasant Valley, Oklahoma; also one brother Barnhart Bowers of Dayton, Ohio.
In 1857 he came with his family and settled at Center Point, Linn County, Iowa, where he worked at his trade as a miller, until he enlisted in January 1864, and served faithfully as an infantry soldier in the War of the Rebellion until the close of the war under the command of Otis Whiting. He enlisted January 4th and was discharged January 2, 1865.
In 1880 he moved to Creighton, Knox County, Nebraska where he was engaged in farming until 1889 when he again moved and came to Wood, Iowa where he made his home up to the time of his death.
He joined the Methodist church in 1850 and was a firm believer in the Bible.
The funeral was held from his late residence, Sunday, April 8, 1905. The services were conducted by the Methodist minister of Edgewood. The interment was in the Strawberry Point cemetery.
May he rest in peace and may his soul partake of the glories awaiting those true to this life, their country and their God.
