Mr. Ernest Samuel Smith was born on a farm in Elk Township, Clayton County, Iowa, on April 15, 1904.
He was made a child of God through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism administered by the pastor of the St Johns United Church of Christ in Garber, Iowa. He remained a member of this church until March 24, 1940, when he joined the St Paul Lutheran Church in Guttenberg, Iowa.
Mr. Smith was not only an active and faithful Communicant member of this congregation, but he also served as a member of the Church Council.
On June 8, 1929, Mr. Smith and Miss Carrie Noack were united in holy matrimony in Garber, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with one daughter: namely, Gloria.
Throughout his married life Mr. Smith worked in a number of capacities. Most of his life he lived and made his home in Clayton, County, Iowa.
Following an active life of service to his family, community, and church, and following a gradual decline in health, Mr. Smith was called to rest by our heavenly Father at 1:50 o'clock, Sunday morning, October 3, 1976. He thus attained the goodly age of 72 years, 5 months and 18 days. Mr. Smith was a hospital patient in Guttenberg, Iowa at the time of his death.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 1 brother. He leaves to mourn his departure: his wife (Mrs. Carrie Smith, Guttenberg, Iowa), 1 daughter (Mrs. Leland Tomkins, Guttenberg, Iowa), 4 brothers (Mr. George Smith of California, Mr. Huston Smith, Oelwein, Iowa, Mr. John Smith, Gateway, CO, and Mr. Wayne Smith, Edgewood, Iowa), 2 sisters (Mrs. Hattie Hansel, Edgewood, Iowa, and Mrs. Walter-Margaret Ortman, Charles City, Iowa), 2 garnchildren (Shelia and Terry), numerous other relatives, and many friends.

The Guttenberg Press, Wednesday, October 6, 1976 printed essentially the same obituary as posted above, but with the following additional information .....
- Died at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital
- Son of Samuel and Mae (Hansel) Smith
- Mr. Smith donated his body to medical science
