Services for Lester "Les" Aulwes, 79, of Guttenberg were conducted by Intern Pastor Laura Meier at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 3, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Guttenberg.
Mr. Aulwes died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 1995, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Interment was in Guttenberg City Cemetery with the following casket bearers: Kevin Becker, Randy Aulwes, Ryan Aulwes, Brett Aulwes, Tim Aulwes, Jason Aulwes, Chad Aulwes and Robert Tuszynski. Military rites were accorded at the cemetery by the American Legion, Amvets and V.F.W. posts.
Visitation was Thursday at the Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home.
Lester Edward Aulwes was born Sept. 23, 1915, on a farm north of Guttenberg, a son of William and Emma (Reinitz) Aulwes. He attended Borcherding District No. 8 country school as a youth. He was in the trucking business from 1933-40. During World War II he served with the Army in the Pacific area. After his release from the Army, he and his brother, Raymond, started Aulwes Brothers Rock Crushing business and later he operated a milk route. In 1957 Mr. Aulwes and his wife opened Les & Em's Drive-In and operated it for over 20 years, retiring in 1978.
On July 3, 1935, he was united in marriage at St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church in Galena, Ill., to Emma Tomkins, who survives.
Mr. Aulwes had been involved in many Guttenberg organizations, including city council, St. Paul Church council, American Legion, a 50-year member of the Guttenberg Volunteer Fire Department and served as treasurer for 30 years. In 1981 he received the Distinguished Governor's Award for being a volunteer fireman.
Surviving besides his wife are one daughter, Mrs. Kathryn "Kay" (and Don) Becker of Guttenberg; three sons, William "Bill" (and Lois) of Racine, Wis., Lonnie (and Barb) of Cary, Ill., and Gary (and Sue) of Guttenberg; 10 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Rhonda Aulwes in 1970; and two brothers, Raymond in 1958, and Donald in 1979.
