Died in Elkader, Monday, June 17th, 1872, Mrs. Laura, wife of E. W. Stewart, aged 68 years.
Mrs. Steward had been ill only about a week and no one thought her sickness was of a serious nature, hence there was universal surprise mingled with general sorrow when her sudden transition from life to death was announced.
Perhaps no lady in the county was more extensively known nor more generally esteemed than Mrs. Steward. Possessed of more than ordinary ability as a writer and an admirable judgment which enabled her to grasp difficulties and to solve them, she was often selected here and elsewhere to fill positions of honor, and never disappointed the most ardent expectations of her. In every good and praiseworthy public work in which it was compatible for a lady to embark, Mrs. Stewart was found heart and hand engaged. No labor for here was to severe; no obstacle to great to accomplish some good to her friends or the community. As a writer, many of the old readers of the Journal will remember the able contributions from her pen which have appeared in these columns from time to time. There was always decidedness about her positions, and a perspicuity in her style of writing which never left any one in doubt as to what she meant, and besides, she often displayed in her writings a large acquaintance with the best authors and a fund of information not often found among the ladies of today.
The loss of Mrs. Stewart is a serious one; the husband loses a good wife and the son and daughters who survive her, a fond mother, while society will mourn for a kind neighbor and an estimable lady.
The large attendance at the funeral yesterday was evidence of the heartfelt sympathy of the community with the bereaved family, and while this may be but little consolation to them now, it may aid in soothing their sorrows hereafter.
