Joseph Lecour was born in New York, July 20th, 1821, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. Bacon, in Edgewood, Iowa, Nov. 13th, 1913, t the age of 92 years, 3 months and 24 days. He was the eldest of fifteen children, all of whom are dead excepting one sister.
He was married to Lucy Colburn on Feb. 22nd, 1845. To this union were born one son and eight daughters, all of whom preceded the father in death, excepting three daughters, Mrs. Lucy Burdine, of Frantdale, Oregon; Mrs.. Cynthia Hawley and Mrs. Angeline Bacon, of Edgewood.
With his wife and four daughters he came to Iowa in 1856, locating near Edgewood, then a Yankee Settlement. he soon bought a place near what is now the Rosenkrans school house, where he made his home until the settlement of Dakota began. Selling his home he moved to Dakota to begin pioneer life over again. He remained in Dakota for ten years but thinking old Iowa far ahead, he returned to spend the remainder of his life here.
His wife died Oct. 2nd, 1897, after which he made his home with his children. Again he spent four years in Dakota and one in Canada with a daughter, returning alone to Edgewood at the age of 86 years.
He was a hard working man, a kind neighbor and ever ready to lend a helping hand. He was of a strong constitution and enjoyed good health until near the end.
he leaves three children, thirteen grand-children, a number of great grandchildren and one great great grand-son twelve years old, and a large circle of friends to mourn his loss. He has always been a faithful member of the Catholic church.
The funeral services were conducted at the Catholic church at Littleport, Rev. Father Minogue officiating. The remains were laid to rest beside his wife in the Catholic cemetery at Littleport.
