Henry Benschneider, son of Mr. and Mrs. August Benschneider, was born on a farm near Littleport on Dec. 24, 1869. He died in the hospital at McGregor early Wednesday morning, July 13, after an illness of three months at the age of eighty-five years, six months and nineteen days. Mr. Benschneider was a life long resident of Clayton county and for the past sixty-five years a resident of Elkader.

Mr. Benschneider received his education in the rural school and then was apprentice to Werner Eggerth in Kossuth county, from whom he learned his trade. Since then he worked steadily at his trade of carpenter and contractor until about a year ago. He was the contractor and carpenter for the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church of Elkader, and the Catholic church at Littleport. He built a large number of homes in Elkader and remodeled many, he also built many homes and barns in the country.

On April 10, 1901, in the home of the bride he was united in marriage to Ida Lundt of Elkport. In 1951, he and his wife had the privilege of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary. Mr. Benschneider was a member of the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church.

He is survived by his wife and son, Leroy, two grandchildren, Bonnie Lu and Benjamin Henry Benschneider, two sisters, Mrs. Jacob Thein of Colesburg, and Mrs. John Enders of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Violette, who died in infancy.

Services were held at the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church Friday, July 15, at 2 o'clock. Burial was in the East Side cemetery with the Rev. Paul Kitterer officiating.
