Clayton County Register, Wed., 14 Dec. 1938.
St. Olaf- Sigrid Larson, daughter of Lars and Anna Torkelson, was born January 12, 1856, in Numedal, Norway, and died Nov. 29, 1938, nearly 83 years old, from bronchial pneumonia, after an illness of only two days. At the age of six she came to this country with her parents. A brother and sister died during a cholera epidemic on shipboard and were buried at sea. The family lived for a year in Wisconsin and then moved to Clayton county, which was her home until death.
On September 4, 1876, she was married to Nels Johnson, and they made their home on a farm near St. Olaf. The last five years of her life she lived with her daughter, Johanna Knudson, three miles northwest of St. Olaf.
Funeral services were held at the Norway church, December 1, with burial in the adjoining cemetery, where she was laid to rest beside her husband, who died in 1919, and a son, who died at the age of two years. The Rev. S. J. Strandjord officiated.
Mrs. Johnson was a faithful member of the Norway Lutheran church and a charter member of the St. Olaf Ladies Aid. She could always be depended on to do and give willingly to anything connected with the church.
She leaves to mourn her passing six children: Albert of Montana, Oscar of Littleport, Mrs. Anna West of Elkader, Mrs. Henry Knudson, Nick and Henry of St. Olaf; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and a host of friends both young and old. She will be remembered for her cheerful, sunny disposition and ready smile.
Six of the grandsons acted as pallbearers.
