Littleport- Vernon Leland Clinton, son of William and Anna Rieck Clinton, was born at Littleport, Iowa, on July 8, 1912. He was received into the Christian church through holy baptism on October 13 of the same year at Hope Lutheran Church. He was confirmed on March 29, 1953.

Mr. Clinton lived his childhood years in Littleport and there received his education in the public school. On October 9, 1935, he was united in marriage with Ruth Marie Baars. The Clintons lived most of their married life in the Littleport area. The last 12 years they have owned and operated the Clinton Grocery Store in Communia. The previous 15 years the family lived in Littleport where Mr. Clinton was in the trucking business. During World War II he was called to the service of his country, serving in amphibious training of the U.S. Army.

Last Tuesday morning Mr. Clinton suffered a severe stroke and was taken to Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Manchester where he died Friday, April 2.

Preceding him were his parents; a daughter, Donna, who died in infancy in 1946; a son, Kent Jon, who also died in infancy in 1955; three brothers, George, Erwin and Lloyd.

Surviving are his wife; six children, Sheldon, Cedar Rapids; Roland, Santee, Calif.; Mrs. Harlan (Shirley) Meyer, Garber; Nyal, Marion; Dennis, San Diego, Calif.; and DeVere, Cedar Rapids; and six grandchildren; two brothers, Homer of Winthrop, Richard of Littleport; four sisters, Mrs. Bryan (Luella) Farmer, Volga City, Mrs. Clarence (Minnie) Rief, Waterloo, Mrs. Victor (Pearl) Balluff, New Plymouth, Ida., Mrs. Romanus (Darlene) Zapf, Littleport.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon, April 6, at Hope Lutheran Church, Littleport, Calvin Fick, pastor, officiating with burial in Hill Crest Cemetery, Volga City. Pallbearers were Alvin Klink, Harold Ehrhardt, Lawrence Beck, Robert Fishel, Carl Wessel and John Stemmer.
