In the death of Mrs. Frank Sebastian this community was again called upon last week to mourn the passing to the Great Beyond of another of the pioneers who was instrumental in building to its gigantic proportions this unsurpassed state of Iowa.
Mary June Gass was born in Dearborn county, Indiana, May 16th, 1836. She came to Iowa about 1856 and was united in marriage to Frank Sebastian April 26, 1860. This worthy couple were residents of this county until death claimed Mr. Sebastian on Jan. 29th, 1909. Since that time Mrs. Sebastian made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ed Mathews. After a short illness she passed peacefully away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Barton, of North McGregor, on March 14th, 1915.
From girlhood she had been a member of the M.E. church and in the walks of life had shown to all that she was a devoted Christian, a loving wife and mother.
She is mourned by six children, Leonard, of Cresco, Iowa; Charles and Mrs. Ella Gurtisen, of Monona; Mrs. Frank Barton, of North McGregor; Mrs. Daniel Reardon and Mrs. Ed Mathews, of Farmersburg. One daughter preceded her in 1884. She also has two brothers in South Dakota, one in Montana, also seven grandchildren, who with other relatives mourn the loss of a true helper.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. T. M. Neilsen, of McGregor, on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. After a prayer at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ed Mathews, the remains were taken to the M.E. church, where many of the deceased's old time neighbors and friends were assembled and with tears and many beautiful flowers silently expressed their love and respect for the departed. Interment was in Farmersburg cemetery where the remains were laid beside those of the husband of almost half a century.
