Clayton County Register, Thur., 28 June 1934.
Hugo Henry William Taake, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Taake, died at the Wm. Kahlbaum home here Tuesday morning. He was born April 11, 1893, on a farm near Clayton Center. Here he spent his boyhood. In 1907 Mr. Taake was confirmed in the Lutheran Zion's church at Clayton Center, of which church he was a voting member. On Oct. 1, 1918, he was united in marriage to Miss Mahalia Kahlbaum. This union was blessed with a daughter, Valerian Ladean. Since an accident, ten years ago, when he fell from a high barn on his farm, his health was undermined. In September, last year, sudden illness overcame him and he was taken to St. Mary's hospital at Rochester, where he underwent four serious operations. After 12 weeks he returned to his family, holding the hope with them that he was fully recovered, yet in April this year he was rushed again to the hospital and submitted to two further operations. But he did not receive the expected relief, and returned after five weeks. The last six weeks he stayed at the home of his father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Kahlbaum, at Elkader. Here, surrounded by his family, he found all the care love could give unto him. The days of his sickness were full of terrible pains. It was for him an hour of release when God called him Tuesday morning, at 7:30. May he rest in peace. His lifetime was 41 years, two months and 15 days.
Mr. Taake was always a kind neighbor and friend, ready to lend a helping hand, and his friends were numbered by his acquaintances. He will be missed, not only by his family, but his friends as well.
Those who mourn are his widow, Mrs. Mahalia, nee Kahlbaum; his 11-year-old daughter, Valerian Ladean; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Taake, nee Vulgraf, and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 1:30 at the home of Wm. Kahlbaum and in the Lutheran church at Clayton Center. Interment will be made at the new cemetery, the Rev. Berthold F. Korte officiating.
