Died--At his home in Strawberry Point, Iowa on Tuesday morning, June 4th, 1912, George N. Steele, seventy eight years.
George Nelson Steele, son of Edwin and Charlotte Steele was born in the town of Richmond, Ontario County, New York on December 15th, 1833.
In the year 1845 he moved with his fathers family to Yankee Settlement, now Edgewood, Clayton County, Iowa and has resided in Clayton and Delaware counties continuously since, a period of nearly sixty seven years. Mr. Stelle was thus one of the earliest pioneers of this vicinity and has witnessed the growth of Iowa from a wild, undeveloped territory having a population of only a few thousand inhabitants scattered along the eastern border, to one of the wealthiest and leading agricultural states in the union. mr. Steele experienced all the hardships and difficulties as well as the joys and pleasure of pioneer life.
On October 19, 1857 he was married to France Moshier at her fathers home near Manchester, Iowa, who survives him. To Mr. and Mrs. Steele were born two children, W.M. Steele now residing at Strawberry Point and Carrie A. Austin who died February 25, 1884.
Mr. Steele was man of indomitable energy, genial and approachable and had a wide acquaintance throughout northeast Iowa where he was familiarly known under the name of "Jud".
For the past forty-one years Mr. Steele has been a resident of Strawberry Point with the exception of two years at Elkader where he served as jailor of Clayton County, Iowa. For many years Mr. Steele held the position of constable and also acceptably served as deputy sheriff for some time. he was an experienced horseman and for many years successfully followed the profession of veterinarian, having a state diploma. The old pioneers are fast passing away. Very few, if any, have resided in this vicinity longer than Mr. Steele.
He leaves to mourn his departure his widow, with who he has lived for nearly fifty-five years, one son, one granddaughter, one grandson and numerous relatives. Peace to his ashes.
