Another Old Settler Called To His Reward Saturday Afternoon, March 20, After Short Illness.
Alexander D. Hammond was born in Crawford county, Pennsylvania, May 25, 1847, and died at his home in Edgewood, Iowa, March 20, 1909, aged 61 years, 9 months and 26 days.
When three years of age he accompanied his parents to the state of Illinois and in 1853 came with them to Delaware county, Iowa, locating near Manchester. In 1870 they settled in Clayton county where he has since resided, his home having been in and near Edgewood.
He was married June 6, 1871, to Mrs Amanda Reed-Adams, who survives him. He was converted in early manhood, was baptized and joined the United Brethern church which was located in the Rosenkrans neighborhood and of which he was a worthy, faithful member during its existence. For several years previous to and following the disbanding of the church, he served as Sunday School superintendent.
Although he was a sufferer from ill health for a number of years, yet the news of his having passed away came as a shock to his many friends who will miss his familiar form and friendly greeting. He was honest, industrious, a devoted husband, and a faithful, appreciative friend.
Besides the afflicted and lonely wife, there are left to mourn and aged mother, three brothers, Harmon, Douglas and Charles, and two sisters, Mrs. Emma Watts and Mrs. Eliza Reed; also a half-brother, Samuel Hammond and a step-daughter, Mrs. Emma Tomlinson, and other relatives.
The funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church Tuesday, March 23, at one o'clock and were conducted by Rev. C.H. True, assisted by Rev. Frizzel and Rev. Hubbell, after which the weary, worn body was laid to rest in Green Hill cemetery north of Edgewood.
