Eben Riley Munger was born in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, October 11, 1847, where he lived to young manhood, when in 1865 with an older brother he came west, locating in Elkader, Iowa, where he learned the blacksmith trade which he followed for a good many years.

In August 1867 he was united in marriage to Miss Ann E. Scovel, of Clayton County Iowa. To them were born four children as follows: Mrs Olive Gates, of Edgewood, Mrs. Abbie Gleason, of Brockton, Montana, George W., of Dubuque, and Mrs. Hattie Olson who for some time has resided at home, together with four grandchildren survive him.

He also has three brothers and three sisters as follows: W.F. of Rolla, MO., S.R., of Oelwein, M.E., of Elkader, Mrs. Cassidy and Mrs. Gifford of Elkader, and Mrs. White, of Volga City, together with numerous other relatives.

The deceased lived in or near Elkader for many years and for twelve years was the marshall of Elkader.

In 1908 he with Mrs. Munger emigrated to South Dakota where he took government land and resided on same until he proved up. Then returned to Iowa locating in Edgewood where he spent the remainder of his life.

For the last ten years he has been in very poor health caused by leakage of the heart brought on by over work, and for the past three years has been a constant sufferer. All was done that loving hands could do to lighten his suffering but the summons came to his relief and he peacefully passed to the beyond at noon September 12, 1917, age 69 years, 11 months and 1 day.

Funeral services were held at the house Friday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Mrs. Smith, pastor of the Congregational Church, and internment was made in the Edgewood Cemetery.

The attendance was very large and the floral offerings elaborate and beautiful.

The following relatives and friends from out of town were present at the funeral: S.R. Munger and wife, Forest Munger and wife, John Thorp and wife and Mrs. Eva Connor, of Oelwein. Leo Kennert and wife, of Maynard, Fred White, wife and son Kenneth, of Volga, M.E. Munger, C.N. Scovel,wife and daughter Sadie and Chas. Carpenter and wife, of Elkader.
