Dubuque Telegraph Herald – November 1, 1949

Elkader, Ia. – Services were scheduled 1:30 p.m. Tuesday from the family residence to the Norway Lutheran near St. Olaf at 2 p.m. for Miss Johanna Herbranson, 90, who died Sunday at the McGregor Hospital where she had been a patient for four weeks with a heart condition.

Miss Herbranson was born and raised on a farm in Wagner Township of Clayton County and made her home there until moving to Elkader 10 years ago. The farm has been in the family since 1854 and is still in the Herbranson name.

Surviving is a sister Miss Emma Herbranson. The Witt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangement.

Johanna Herbranson was born on April 20, 1859, to Ole and Sigrid Herbranson, who came to this country more than a century ago. They settled on the Herbranson place located in Wagner township in Clayton county where she was born and spent the greater part of her life with the exception of a short time in Decorah and the last nine years in Elkader.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Norway Lutheran church and attended the rural school near their farm.

She was one of twelve children, of whom only one, her sister Emma, survives. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

For the past fifteen years she was more of less an invalid and had been bedridden for the past five months. Her favorite pastime was reading.

She died Sunday morning, Oct. 30, at the McGregor hospital. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, with burial in the Norway cemetery. Pallbearers were: Leo Olson, Ole Embretson, Thomas Peterson, Walde Embretson, Vebjorn Landsgard, and Adolph Olson.

Relatives from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Knudtson, Eads, Colo.; Mr. and Mrs. Roderick Knudtson and Maurice Knudtson, Kit Carson, Colo.; Mr. and Mrs. Fairfax Wethey, Geneva, N.Y.; John and Henry Larson, Evansville, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Nelson, West Union; Mr. and Mrs. Me___on Loftsgard and Mrs. Patrick, Postville; Mrs. Helmer Loftsgard, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Loftsgard, Elgin; Mrs. Henry Olson; M_____N Amundson, and Mrs. T. Amundson, Clermont.
