[from the Thurs., 4 July 1889 issue of the “Elkader Weekly Register,” Obituary section, page 5, column 4]
MRS. WILHELMINA HECKMEISTER.
As noted in our last issue Mrs. Wilhelmina Heckmeister was stricken with paralysis early last week, and on Friday she died from the effects of the shock.
Deceased was born near Hanover, Germany, on March 21st, 1833, being a little over 56 years of age at the time of her death. She came to the United States with her parents and settled in Wisconsin, where on December 23d, 1852, she was married to Henry Heckmeister, who died a little over a year ago at this place. In 1866, at the close of the war they came to Elkader, and she has resided here since that time. She leaves nine children to mourn her loss.
Mrs. Heckmeister was a hard working woman, who was respected by all who knew her, and the funeral on Sunday was quite largely attended. Rev. L. S. Cooley preached her funeral sermon and her remains were laid to their final rest in the east side cemetery.
We are requested by the children of the deceased to return their heartfelt thanks to those kind friends and neighbors, who assisted them during the sickness and at the death of their mother.
[TRANSCRIBER’S NOTE: All of her children spelled the surname as “Heckmaster.” Her maiden name was Schmidt, as noted in the transcribed county marriage records of several of her daughters at familysearch.org.]
