LE ROY SMITH
LeRoy DeWight Smith, son of Fred and Harriet Torrey Smith, was born Oct. 19, 1875. He lived on the Smith farmstead two miles south of Elkader until it was taken over by his son Clyde. Moving to Elkader, he worked in the sheriff’s office with the late Louis Palas and was also a peace officer of Boardman Township. The last seven years he lived with his daughter and family, the Robert Dinans of St. Olaf.
He fell on Nov. 29 and suffered a broken hip and was taken to the General Hospital at Prairie du Chien. Other complications occurred and he died Dec. 9, 1961.
He was married to Linna Walther on Dec. 25, 1900. Three children were born, Clyde, Luyre (deceased) and L’Dean. His daughter Luyre died at the age of five, and in 1949 his wife Linna died.
Later he married to Mina Williamson.
Mr. Smith was a great lover of horses and was noted for his beautiful horses. For many years he led the Memorial Day parade in Elkader.
He is survived by a son Clyde, Elkader; a daughter, Mrs. Robert Dinan, St. Olaf; two granddaughters, Marjorie Smith and Jean Dinan; three brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, Dec. 11, at Witt’s. Burial was at the East Side cemetery in Elkader. Pallbearers were Otto Meisner, Elmer Mueller, Gus Storbeck, Jim Kelleher, Harold Downey and William Dahling.

Correction of L. D. Smith Obituary
It was incorrectly stated in the obituary of L. D. Smith in the Dec. 14 issue of the paper that Mr. Smith was survived by three sisters and three brothers. It should have read Mr. Smith was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. Kenneth Breitsprecher was a pallbearer instead of Jim Kelleher. We are sorry these errors occurred.
CARD OF THANKS
We wish to thank all our friends and neighbors for their cards and visits to our father while he was in the hospital, and all the words of comfort and help at the time of his death. A special thanks to Rev. Kitterer and Rev. Volle.
