SUDDEN DEATH OF HENRY WILKER
On Wednesday evening, Jan. 14th, 1903, occurred the sudden death of Gerhard Henry Wilker, one of the prominent farmers of Read Township. Mr. Wilker had been in poor health the past summer and a few weeks since had an attack of pneumonia but had recovered sufficiently to attend a birthday party at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Maehl. He had been enjoying himself in a social way, when suddenly his spirit fled, a stroke of heart trouble ending his life.Mr. Wilker was born in Kirchspiel, Belm in Osnabruck, Hanover, on April 17th, 1833. When 17 years old he came to this country, going first to St. Louis where he remained during the winter then came to the vicinity of Garnavillo. He was married to Anna Maria Kregel on Jan. 26th, 1860, who died in 1863, leaving him two children, one of whom is living, Mrs. Henry Suddendorf, of Farmersburg. In 1864 he was married to Wilhelmina Voss, of Clayton Centre, who is left to mourn his departure. Thirteen children, of whom two are dead, were the result of this union. Those living are: Mrs. John Maehl, of Read Twp., Mrs. J. Jutting, of Lyon Co., George Wilker of Farmersburg Twp., Mrs. Frank Lenth of Monona Twp., Mrs. Karl Gransow of Lyon Co., Fritz Wilker of Farmersburg Twp., Mrs. Henry Taake of Read Twp., and John, Ida, Bertha and Henry at home.
For nearly 37 years Mr. Wilker made his home on a farm near Clayton Centre and was known as a faithful friend and good neighbor. He was a member of the Lutheran church and held the highest regard of all who knew him. The funeral at Clayton Centre on Saturday was very largely attended. Rev. Braun of Farmersburg officiating.
