Mrs. Fred Franke, one of the pioneers of Sioux county, died at her home in Ireton Sunday afternoon following an illness of several months. Anna May [sic] Schutter [Schuette] was born at Schilske, Germany, Feb. 13, 1846. She came to Guttenberg, Iowa, with her parents in 1860 and was confirmed in the Lutheran church the following year. In 1863 she was united in marriage to Henry Duwe, who died within two years after their marriage. In 1866 she was united in marriage to Fred Franke. In 1872 they came to Sioux county and located on a homestead south of the present town of Sioux Center. They moved to Ireton in 1901, where they have since made their home. Besides her husband she leaves one son and five daughters to mourn her death. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Germany Lutheran church in Ireton, Rev. Schmidt conducting the services. Interment took place at the Lutheran cemetery a few miles southeast of Ireton.
[TRANSCRIBER’S NOTES: Her first name is given as Maria in her marriage records at St. John Lutheran Church at Guttenberg, IA, and in the baptism record of her first daughter. Findagrave.com gives her first name as Mary. Her father was Heinrich Schuette (sometimes Schutte), who died in 1893, and Anna Marie Stender or Steffen, who died in 1905, and both of whom are buried at Ceres, Iowa.]
