News was received here Monday that Dr. John Cain had passed away at the home of his daughter, mrs. A.F. Roder, at Minneapolis, following a ten days' illness, death being due to hardening of the arteries.
The aged physician was widely known throughout Allamakee and Clayton counties and was held in high esteem by all. He was active in promoting Waukon's welfare by erecting the spacious Cain block on West Main street and two substantial residences nearby, and was a good and worthy citizen otherwise.
Deceased was born 85 years ago at Covington, Kentucky. When a child he came to Elkader, which was his home for many years, and where he received his early education. Desiring to follow the medical profession, he completed a course in medicine at Ruth* Medical College, Chicago.
About 35 years ago Dr. Cain left Elkader, where he had been a practicing physician, and located in Waukon. It was only a few years ago he was obliged to give up his active practice on account of the infirmities of age.
He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Rose Quinn of Elkader, who died in 1888. In 1894 he was again wed, his bride being Miss Mary Ryan of Waukon, who preceded him in death on December 15, 1934.
An only daughter, Mrs. Roeder of Minneapolis, and a foster son, Walter Cain, of Chicago, are left to mourn the passing of a parent whose first consideration was the welfare of his loved ones. Besides the children he is survived by a brother, Joseph Cain, of Elkader, and a sister, Mrs. Dennis Melory, of Hettinger, N.D., neither of whom were able to attend the last sad rites.
Funeral services were held this morning at St. Patrick's Catholic church of which he was a member, a solemn high mass being celebrated by Msgr. John C. Stuart. Burial was in the family lot in Mt. Olivet cemetery.
