A telephone message was received Monday from Independence, announcing the death of John Jones, who had been taken there about two weeks ago for medical treatment. Mr. Jones was one of the pioneer residents of this vicinity and was a man of many good qualities. The remains were shipped here for burial and were laid to rest in the Brown cemetery, near Colesburg, Thursday.

-- -- --

On Monday our community was shocked to learn of the death of one of our pioneer residents, John J. Jones.

Mr. Jones was born in Summerset County, Pennsylvania, October 7th, 1841, and died April 7th, 1912, aged 70 years and 6 months.

He came to Iowa in 1857, locating in Mallory township. In 1861 he enlisted in Co. G, 21st Iowa Volunteers, where he served his country three years.

In 1866 he was united in marriage to Margerette Harbaugh. To this union was born two daughters, one dying in infancy.

He leaves to mourn his death as a faithful husband and a kind father, a widow, one daughter, four brothers, four grandchildren and an orphan boy whom he raised.

The funeral was held Thursday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ross Nichols, Rev. Hansel officiating. Interment at the Brown Cemetery near Colesburg.

May he rest in peace.

Card of Thanks
We wish to express our sincere thanks to the choir, friends and neighbors who so kindly assisted us during the sickness, death and burial of our beloved husband and father.
Mrs. Margerette Jones
Mrs. S.R. Nichols

Note: his military pension also states he died 4/7/1912 at Independence, IA

Other notes: I was interested in determining who the adopted son was. I've included what I found in case it is of interest to others:

The 1885 Iowa state census entry for John & Margaret (Margerette) includes their daughter Loretta and a 7 year-old Delbert Beddow.

The 1900 census entry for John & Mary (Margerette) includes Telly Beddow, age 23, relationship 'boarder'.

The 1905 Iowa state census index shows John, Margaret & Del Beddow as a family group (this index has no relationships or ages)

The 1910 census entry for John & Margaret includes Delbert G. Jones, age 33.

Delbert/Del/Telly is most likely the 'orphan boy' he raised.

Delbert G. Beddow died 6/23/1927 & is buried Oakland cemetery, Manchester, Delaware co. IA
