Mrs. Mary McCarthy, a sister of James Humphrey of this place died at her home in Sturges, Mo., Saturday, June 20th after an illness of about three weeks.
Her remains were brought to Elkader for burial and funeral services were held in St Joseph's church Tuesday morning, June 23rd at 10:00 o'clock. Rev. Father Taken officiated.
The services were largely attended, among those from out of town being: Mrs. John Vaughn, Algona; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Ryan, Mary Humphrey, Mr. and Mrs. James Carrol, Mrs. Dan Doody, Mrs. R. Collins, Mr. and Mrs. Will Humphrey, Anna Humphrey, Emily Humphrey and Bert Humphrey of Monona; Mr. and Mrs. James Humphrey of Postville; Mrs. Matt Griffin and children, Mr. and Mrs. John McLaughlin, Mr. and Mrs. James McLaughlin, Mr. and Mrs. Mac McLaughlin, McGregor; John McLaughlin, Gary, Ind., Mrs. M. Latham, Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Wareham and Mrs. Hennessey, Strawberry Point; Mr. and Mrs. Con Wareham, Dysart, Iowa.
Mary Humphrey was born May 10, 1856 at Monona, Iowa, the daughter of James and Katherine Humphrey of that place.
Growing to womanhood there she was married to Jerimiah McCarthy May 1st 1876. Six children were born to them all of whom are living to mourn the loss of a devoted mother. They are Mary, Charles and James at Sturges, Mo., Frank and Ellen at Kansas City; and Mrs. Kathryn Foran at Strawberry Point.
Mrs. McCarthy is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Margaret McLaughlin, McGregor, Ella at Plankington, S.D.; M.J. Humphrey, Mason City; James Humphrey and Mrs. Anna Beers, Elkader.
Together with her relatives a large circle of friends sorrow at her decease but will hold her memory as a living shrine.

~Likely burial place is St. Joseph's in Elkader, where her husband is buried, but this has not confirmed by the obituary transcriber.
