Again we are called upon to perform the sad task of announcing the death of a resident of Elkader. This time the messenger of death has entered the home of H. Meyer, and taken there from its brightest jewel – the wife and mother – by valvular disease of the heart complicated by hemorrhage of the lungs.

Little did we think last week when penning the lines congratulating the happy parents on the arrival of a little daughter at their home, we should within a week be called upon to indite words of sympathy for widowed farther and orphaned children.

It has been truly said that “in the midst of life we are with death.” No truer exemplification of it can be found in this case. Full of life and joy, with everything to life for, the devoted mother has been called away, and sorrow pervades the home where before happiness was supreme.

Lucy A. Appelman was born at Clermont, Fayette county, June 1856, and died Monday evening, March 25th 1889, being nearly 33 years of age. She resided with her parents until November 1877, at which time she was married to Henry Meyer.

After marriage they took up their residence at Beulah, in this county, where Mr. Meyer was engaged as station agent of the C. M. & St. P. railway and superintendent of the Iowa Eastern railway. After some years residence there, Mr. Meyer was elected cashier of the First National Bank of Elkader.

To them have been born three children, two daughters and a son, who are now left with their disconsolate father to mourn the death of one whose every care and thought has been for their welfare.

Besides the husband and children, there is an aged father, Elias Appelman, two sisters, Mrs. William Larrabee of Clermont and Mrs. H. J. Grotewohl, of Elkader, and three brothers, Noyes, Erastus and Frank Appelman, to sorrow for the loss of a kind and obedient daughter and true, loving sister.

The deceased was a woman of many fine qualities of mind and heart, which, wherever she has lived has drawn about her a large circle of friends, who will sincerely mourn her departure from the walks of life.

The funeral was held from the family residence yesterday afternoon, and was very largely attended. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. L. S. Cooley, and her remains were laid to rest in the East side cemetery.

The afflicted family will have the deepest sympathy of our entire community in their great sorrow.
