Archie Besst, of Oneida, was killed shortly after two o’clock Monday afternoon when the traction engine on which he was engineer exploded with a roar. Besst’s death was not instantaneous, but came after an hour’s suffering from burns and scalds that covered almost his entire body. The engine was totally demolished and the explosion threw burning coals into the straw piles resulting form the threshing, setting them afire and threatening the destruction of the farm buildings. The men at work managed to remove the thresher from the fire zone and afterwards to extinguish the flames before they had done any further damage than destroy the straw stacks. The accident happened on a farm about two miles from Oneida.
