Barbara Meier (nee Zier) was born at Leutesheim, Badgen, Germany, Dec. 24, 1836, and came to this country in the spring of 1858. It required 57 days crossing the ocean in a sailboat, landing in St. Louis, and then up the river to Clayton, Iowa, and from there to Giard township.
She was united in marriage on June 13, 1858, to Michael Meier. To this union were born four children, three daughters and one son.
Her husband preceded her in death in 1904, one daughter, Martha, in childhood and Caroline Elet in 1933.
In the spring of 1859 they started farming near Froelich. After nine years they moved to the farm now occupied by her son where she lived until two years ago, since then being cared for at the home of her daughter at Froelich where she passed away on October 30, at the age of 97 years, 10 months and six days.
She joined the Prairie Evangelical church as a charter member in 1859 and was the last charter member to pass away.
