GUSTA, SCHMIDT, HOMAN, MEYER

Clayton County Register, Wed., 25 Aug. 1937.

Gustav Gusta died at his home on the East Side Friday evening, Aug. 20, at 8:30. He had been ill about a week following a fall.

Mr. Gusta was born in Germany on August 19, 1846, and so, at the time of his death had reached the age of 91 years and one day. He did not come to this country until he was 29 years of age, when he came first to Dubuque and then to Clayton county.

February 28, 1875, he was united in marriage to Minnie Schmidt, and until twenty years ago they farmed in Cox Creek township, after which they moved to Elkader where they have lived ever since. This year, this couple very quietly observed an anniversary which but few people have the privilege to observe - the 62nd anniversary of their wedding.

Six children, all living, were born to this union, and they, together with his wife, mourn his death. They are Mrs. Emma Homan of Waukon, Mrs. C. J. Meyer, Otto, Hugo and Amelia, here in Elkader, and Ernie on a farm near Strawberry Point. Besides these, there are also 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, as well as a large circle of friends.

With the exception of a few years spent in Nebraska, the deceased has been a resident of this county and this immediate vicinity ever since he came to this country 62 years ago. In that long span of years Mr. Gusta had seen many changes and had he been a man given to visiting, he no doubt could have told of many interesting experiences of the early days.

Funeral services were held at the late home Sunday afternoon at 1:30 and at the Peace Evangelical church at 2:00, with burial in the East Side cemetery, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.

Photo added by S. Ferrall 2/24/2024. The photo of Mr. Gusta appeared in a news article at the time of their 60th wedding anniversary. Unfortunately I neglected to record the name & date of the paper, although it was probably the Clayton County Register.
