St. Olaf - William Carney was born in Strawberry Point, Iowa, April 11, 1872, and died at his home in St. Olaf, Iowa, Jan. 2, 1939, at the age of 66 years, eight months and 22 days.

He lived in Srawberry Point until six years of age, then moved to St. Olaf, where he has resided the greater part of his life.

On July 4, 1893, he was married to Sarah Olson of St. Olaf. To this marriage were born three children, Mabel Geneva (who died in infancy), Maude Nettie, and Dewey Leroy.

He was a carpenter by trade and followed this profession up until the time of his death. He was stricken with a heart attack Friday morning, Dec. 30. Pneumonia developed, followed by a second heart attack, after which he grew steadily weaker and passed away at 7:45 p.m., Monday, Jan 2, the 44th anniversary of his first child, Mabel's death.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Sarah: one daughter, Mrs. H. M. Herrick of Wadsworth, Ill.; one son, Dewey Leroy, of Chicago; four grandchildren, Mrs. E. G. Champeny of Gurnee, Ill., Dorothy and Williamette Herrick of Wadsworth, Ill., and Donald William Carney of Chicago; one great-granddaughter, Jeneil Champney, of Gurney, Ill.; four sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Mina Orvis, Mrs. Henry Wilke, of St. Olaf; Mrs. Edwin Olson of Clermont; Miss Laura Knudson and Elmer Knudson of St. Olaf; Earl Knudson of Mason City, and several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

The pallbearers were Otto Kaerth, Knut Stearns, John Christenson, Louie Embretson, Fred Orvis, Henry Embretson, Harry Barnum and Eric Aarvig. Funeral services were held Thursday at the Norway Lutheran church with the Rev. S. J. Strandjord in charge.

Those attending the funeral from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Olson and Mrs. Jimmy Smith, of Ruthven, Iowa; Mrs. Jack Frisbee of Sanborn, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Herrick, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Herrick, H. S. Kerssen, J. A. Blake, Fred Chase, Otto Kaerth, all of Fredericksburg; Harvey Douglass of Postville; , Mr. and Mrs. H. Dumben and Maxine of Waterville, and Mr. and Mrs. Art Durr of McGregor.
