VANSICKLE, VAN SICKLE

Died near Elkader, August 20th, 1868, Sherman C., son of Emma C. and D.C. Vansickle, aged one year four months and ten days.

This is a father’s and mother’s grief.
To see in one short year decayed
The hopes of future years.
To feel how vain a father’s prayers,
How vain a mother’s tears.
To think the cold grave must close
O’ver what was once the chief
Of all the treasured joys of grief,
This is a parent’s grief.
