Wilcox, Mattie Bell died 1864

Died in Elkader, March 31st, Mattie Bell, only daughter of Calvin G. and Mary E. Wilcox, aged 2 years and eight days.

White lipped mourners have tried to pray

While death was bearing their hopes away,

And chastened spirits have bowed to say,

“It is well.”

But our heart strings quiver still

With the touch of sorrow’s thrill,

Mattie Bell.

All the gladness and all the light,

That came with thy being pure and bright

Seemed departing as grief’s deep night,

O’er us fell.

Yet a promise soothes our pain,

Telling us we shall meet again,

Mattie Bell.
