A Good Woman Called By Death

On last Sunday afternoon, November 21, 1920, at about one o’clock, while in attendance at the funeral of Fred Flagel at the home of her son August, Mrs. John H. Walke, nee Wilhlmine Winch, became suddenly ill with heart trouble, which resulted in her death within a few minutes, and her sudden death was a shock to all in this community, as she had always been enjoying good health. Deceased was born in Wardorf, District of Wedzler, Province of Prussia, Germany, on January 4, 1847, and therefore was 72 years, 10 months and 17 days of age at the time of her death. When about six years of age she came to America with her parents, settling at Martel[,] Ohio, for a time, and in the years 1865 coming to Jefferson township, Clayton County, Iowa, where she was married on June 20 of the same year to Mr. John H. Walke, who preceded her in death on march 24, 1896. The greater part of her life was spent on a farm in Jefferson township, but since the years 1902 she had been a resident of Guttenberg. Mrs. Walke was a true Christian woman in every respect, and she was held in high esteem by all in this community, [sic] She was a kind and true mother, sister and friend, and was ever ready to reach out a helping hand to those in need. Her death is deeply mourned by three sons, Herman, of Jefferson township, August and Fred, of Guttenberg, three daughters, Mrs. Mary Schroeder, of Allen, Nebraska, Mrs. Maggie Brandtman, of Luana, and Mrs. Alvina Herboldsheimer, of Guttenberg, 34 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, one brother, Wm. Winch, of Le Mars, Iowa, two step sisters, Mrs. Wm. Winch, of LeMars, Iowa, and Mrs. Herman Kleeman, of Oklahoma, and many other relatives and friends, by whom she will be sadly missed. Funeral services were held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in this city on Wednesday morning, Rev. J. Janzig officiating. Interment was made in the Ceres Cemetery. The funeral was very largely attended. One daughter, Mrs. Sophia Mueller, one step son, John Walke, and one step daughter, Mrs. Wm. Overbeck, also preceded her in death.
