Thursday, 25 November 1920, Guttenberg Press, p1, c3:
Fritz Flagel,
whose death was mentioned in last week’s Guttenberg Press, was born in Mecklenburg Schwerin, Germany, on November 1, 1826, and died at Guttenberg, Iowa, November 17, 1920, at 11:30 o’clock P. M., after a lingering illness, and at the age of 84 years and 16 days. He was married in Germany to Miss Sophia Bruening in the year 1865, and came to America with his wife in the year 1868, residing near Elkport, Clayton County, Iowa, for a time, and later settling on a farm in Jefferson township, where he lived for many years. His wife preceded him in death on September 21, 1889. Of late years he had been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. August Walke and husband, in this city, where he passed away on Wednesday evening of last week, and where he always received the best of care. He was a patient sufferer during his illness. All that could be done for him was done, but all to no avail. Mr. Flagel was a kind and true father and friend, and he was an ambitious man during his entire life. He was also a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where funeral services were held last Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. Janzig officiating. Interment was made in the City Cemetery. The funeral was largely attended, which showed that deceased was held in high regard by all who knew him. His death is deeply mourned by six sons, Henry, of Herman, Minn., William, of Forestburg, S. D., Charles, of Clark, S. D., Fred, of Marshfield, Wis., Louis of Sheboygan, Wis., and John, of Garnavillo, two daughters, Mrs. Emma Braun, of Bellevue, and Mrs. Anna Walke, of Guttenberg, 26 grandchildren, one brother, Louis Flagel, of Andrew, Iowa, and many other relatives and friends, who will sadly miss him. All of his children, except one son, Fred Flagel, of Marshfield, Wis., who is ill, were in attendance at the funeral.
