Funeral services for Fred John Wahls, 81, were held at St. John’s Lutheran church at Farmersburg, Monday afternoon. Mr. Wahls died at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, after having been in failing health for the last 15 years. Since March 30, this year, he had been in a weakened condition.
Mr. Wahls, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Wahls, was born Aug. 6, 1863, in Mecklenberg, Schwerin, Germany. He was instructed and confirmed in the Lutheran faith by Pastor Paul Fischer in the same locality in which he was born. In 1888 he came to America leaving his brothers, sisters and father in Germany, his mother having died when he was five years old.
After working out as a hired hand for five years in this country, he married Mary Seeland and the couple had two children. Sept. 2, 1897, shortly after the birth of the second child, the mother died. The child died Sept. 21, the same year.
After the death of his wife, Mr. Wahls and his son made their home with his wife’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Seeland, whose farm he later purchased. In 1898 he married Etta Boller and they had three children, one son, Clarence and two daughters, Hortense and Elvira. They moved to Farmersburg in 1928 and made their home there until Mrs. Wahls died June 26, 1933. For the last 11 years, Mr. Wahls made his home with his son Clarence of Castalia.
He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran church of Farmersburg since 1901, having served on the council while this church was being built.
Mr. Wahls is survived by two sons, Irwin of McGregor and Clarence of Castalia; two daughters, Mrs. Arno Funk of St. Olaf and Mrs. Milo Fuelling; six grandchildren, one of whom is with the armed forces in the South Pacific, and three great grandchildren.
