Our community was saddened when the news came that Francis Davis had passed away at his home west of town. Mr. Davis has been in poor health for some time. The funeral was held Monday. People realize that another old soldier and a good citizen has gone. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement.

Francis Timothy Davis was born near Utica, New York, July 7, 1840 and died July 28, 1917, aged 77 years, 21 days.
At the age of 18 years he came west with the rest of the family and located at Pickwick, Minnesota, from which place he went as a soldier in the Civil War. He was a member of Co. I, 11th Minnesota Volunteer Inf., serving as corporal until the close of the war.
Soon after the war, he came to Clayton county, Iowa, which has been his home ever since. He was employed in the Elkader flour mill for fourteen years.
On October 23, 1871 he was united in marriage to Miss Eliza Cummings. To this union were born three children, Fred J., Jennie C. and Edwin W., who died at the age of six years.
He leaves a wife and two children, seven grandchildren and an aged sister, Mrs. Church, of Trempeleau, Wisconsin, besides a host of relatives and friends to mourn his death.
Rev. W.H. Smith, the Methodist minister, of Volga, assisted by Rev. J.M. Jennings, an old friend and comrade, officiated. The funeral was held at the beautiful home of the deceased on Monday. Interment in Hill Crest cemetery.
