During the afternoon of July 4th, 1896, Fred Beckett and family visiting with his brother Sam Beckett who lives about a mile above town and their boys decided to go in swimming down in the slough which runs near the house.
The water is quite swift and Albert Beckett, 9 years of age and a son of Fred Beckett, got beyond his depth and was carried along with the current. His cries for help were heard by the other boys and also two neighboring farmers, who were in the vicinity, probably fishing, but who undoubtedly became excited and did not know what to do and the little fellow sank. The alarm was given and after about forty five minutes dragging the body was recovered.
The remains were interred in the Clayton cemetery Sunday at 2 P.M. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Beckett have the sympathy of this whole community.
