EGER, BRANDON, MILLER, EDER, PADDOCK

The good people of our quiet little village were greatly shocked last Wednesday morning to learn of the sudden death of Mrs. Katherine Eger, on Nov. 11th, 1896, from a stroke of paralysis, at Minneapolis, where she was visiting her daughter Mrs. Mamie Brandon. Mrs. Eger seemed to enjoy fair health for a number years past, and this sudden call was a great shock to her children and her friends.

Deceased was born in a small hamlet in Luxemburg, near the border of France, Dec. 13, 1836, and emigrated to the United States at the age of 17 years, landing at Guttenberg, Ia. She became quite a favorite with the young people of her acquaintance, as she was a vivacious and fun loving girl, and the life of any social gathering at which she was in attendance.

She was married to Frank Eger at Guttenberg May 1, 1855, where they resided for about two years when they removed to Glen Haven, Wis., at which place her husband followed his vocation as stone mason and plasterer.

She then came with him to Clayton early in the spring of 1867 at which time he was engaged as bricklayer and plasterer in the erection of the Krueger, Werges Co. mill. In the ‘70’s they again moved to Wisconsin, but returned to this place in 1880.

In the spring of 1881 she was left a widow by the death of her husband, but possessing a small income in connection with a few private boarders she was enabled to live quite comfortably with the remaining children at home.

Of the eight children that blessed her happy union with Mr. Eger, seven survive her to mourn the loss of a gentle and loving mother, who worshipped her sons and daughters for their endeavors to surround her with all the comforts and pleasures in her declining years, and to these children “Mother” will be ever kept in sacred memory.

The surviving children are: Mrs. Margaret Miller of Port Byron, Ill.; Mrs. Christine Eder of La Valle, Wis.; Henry B. of Libertyville, Ill.; Mrs. Kate Paddock of La Valle, Wis.; Mrs. Mamie Brandon of Minneapolis, Minn., and the Misses Josephine and Daisy, of St. Paul, Minn.

The remains were brought here Thursday afternoon. The funeral services were held at St. Joseph’s church at Garnavillo, Friday a.m., and were laid to rest beside her husband in the Catholic cemetery at that place.
