At his home in Guttenberg, on Friday, Jan. 25, 1884, occurred the death of August Saffelder, one of the early settlers of the county, and a highly respected citizen.
The deceased was born in Uelzon, Germany, August 25th, 1828, being at the time of his death over 56 years of age. He left Germany and came to the United States in 1854, locating at Cincinnati, where he remained about three years, when removed to Guttenberg, 27 years ago. He was married at Guttenberg, to a sister of Mrs. H. C. Grotewohl of this place, who with ten children, survive him, and mourn the loss of a kind husband and father. Mr. S., was highly respected by all who knew him, being honest and upright in his dealings with his fellow man, and had a very large circle of friends who will sincerely mourn his death as that of another good man gone to his reward.
He was a member of the A.O. U. W. order (Iowa Order of United Workmen), and his funeral which took place on Monday afternoon, was conducted by the Guttenberg lodge. The funeral address was delivered by Rev. F. W. Seifert, of Clayton Center. The remains were followed to their resting place in the Guttenberg cemetery by a large concourse of friends.
May he rest in peace.
