It becomes our sad duty to chronicle the sudden death of one of Garnavillo’s most respected people, Mrs. H. Wm. Meyer, at the age of 54 years.
The deceased was born July 28, 1841, in Nordhorn, Hanover, Germany. She was the daughter of Herman Koester, deceased, and his wife Aleida Koester, who is still living here in Garnavillo.
She came to this country with her parents, in 1842, when she was 1 year and 6 months old, landing in Baltimore. Later the family moved to Piqua, Ohio, and from thence to Garnavillo, where Mrs. Meyer was married to her surviving husband May 7, 1861.
Seven children were born to them, of whom Carl, Mrs. Wm. Moellering, Mrs. G.H. Marting and Mrs. Arthur Behrens, are married, while Minnie, Emma and Elmer are still at home.
Mrs. Meyer was respected by all who knew her, she being of a kindly nature and jovial disposition. She was a provident, Christian mother, taking delight in showing her children the way of righteousness.
Mrs. Meyer had not been in good health ever since last winter, when she received a paralytic attack. In spite of medical care her malady grew worse until at last she was denied even the blessed privilege of recognizing those who loved her. She was taken to the hospital at Independence several weeks ago, and was under careful medical treatment.
Friday, May 20, she suffered an attack of apoplexy, and death followed in a few hours. The funeral took place from her home, Monday, June 1, 1896, Rev. Sommerlad officiating. A large number of friends accompanied the remains to the grave. The sympathy of the community is with the stricken family.

Note: although the obit used "Meyer" throughout, the surname is spelled "Meier" in cemetery sexton records and on the gravestone.
