John Wiedow was born on Nov. 23, 1824, in Brissow, Mecklenburg, Germany. He came to this country in 1851 and settled in Garnavillo.
When the call for volunteers came in 1862 he enlisted and became a member of Co. L. 6th Iowa Cavalry. He was with his regiment in its campaign against the Indians, and took part in the battle of White Stone Hills. He spent the winter of 1863-4 in Dakota, helping build Fort Sully. His regiment was mustered out Oct. 17, 1865, and he returned to his family in Garnavillo.
The last years of his life he spent near town, where he enjoyed in peace, the little pension a grateful government gave him for his gallant service.
He was the father of 19 children, 10 of whom have preceded him death. His remains were buried in the new cemetery on Thursday, Rev. Sommerlad officiating.
