Fredrick John Witte was born in Osnabrueck, Hanover, Germany in January 1818. He came to the United States in 1834, when 16 years old, and located in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he labored for 15 years in a pork packing house.

In 1850 he came to Clayton co., and settled on his farm in Read township, where he has resided ever since. He was married three times, the third wife preceding him in death about 15 years ago.

Of the twelve children born to him, 3 preceded him in death. He made his home with George his youngest son and Sophia his youngest daughter on the old homestead.

The rest of his children, live in Lincoln, Dewitt, and Dayton, Neb., of the latter, Henry, Fred, William and Emma arrived here on Sunday to attend the funeral. They had however an opportunity of viewing the remains, as the grave was left uncovered for this purpose.

Mr. Witte was of a retiring disposition and found his greatest pleasure in home life, where he sought and found the rest and retirement needed for the preparation for the next world.

His remains were buried at the cemetery on Saturday, followed by a large number of friends and neighbors. Rev. Sommerland pronounced the eulogium, may he rest in peace. Burial in the Garnavillo cemetery.
