John Siebertz died Feb. 12, 1895. He was born in 1813, at Roserath am Rhine, Germany, and came to America when quite a young man. He worked for many years in New York, Baltimore and Dubuque at his trade, shoemaking.
In 1853 he came to Garnavillo, where he started a shoe shop, and where he has resided ever since.
In 1860 he married Matilda Hoecken and four children, all of whom are yet alive, were born to them. Of these three, Mrs. F. Behrns, John and William live in Garnavillo, and Mrs. Emil Wellman, lives at Yankton, S.D.
Mr. Siebertz was a good man, who had a kind word for everyone. He was noted for his quaint humor, which won him hosts of friends. During the time he has been with us he has seen a generation pass by. He went through trouble uncomplainingly, cobbling along for 61 years, and finally lay down his burden peacefully and went to rest, satisfied that he had been spared for nearly the allotted “four-score and ten years” and had a promised home in the Better Land.
He was buried Feb. 14, 1895 in the Catholic cemetery, Rev. Father Raedler officiating. May he reset in peace.
