Died Jan 22, 1895, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Hauschen, of Clayton, John Christopher Kuenzel, of spasmodic asthma, at the age of 73 years.
Mr. Kuenzel was born in Rehran, Markt Leuten, Bavaria, July 13, 1822, and came with his father to this country, in 1837. They settled at New Bremen, Ohio, and sent for the rest of the family, who arrived in Cincinnati on New Year ’s Day, 1838.
The canals, the only means of conveyance in those days, were all frozen up, and so the family, including Mr. J. H. Kuenzel of this place, walked the entire distance from Cincinnati to New Bremen. While living here Mr. Kuenzel married Carolina Paul, and three children, Conrad, Gusta and Anna were born to them.
In 1855 he and his family in company with Peter Maurer and others drove to this country in a prairie schooner and settled at Garnavillo, where he built the Garnavillo brewery in 1856 and operated it until 1863, when he sold to H. C. Meyer and removed to what is now the Schmelzer farm.
In 1868 he bought an interest in the Buck Creek Valley Mills of B. F. Schroeder and removed there with his family.
While in Garnavillo twp. seven children, Mrs. Jno. Hauschen, Mrs. P. Tonnar, Mrs F. Ousley, Adam, Henry, Minnie and Katie were born, who are all yet alive.
Mr. Kuenzel lived at Buck Creek and continued to run the mill until the death of his wife and sickness compelled him to cease. For the last year he has been staying at the home of his children, and they can find solace in the fact that they all helped to make his last days peaceful.
The funeral will take place on Saturday, Jan. 26, and when the bell tolls we may all know that Clayton county and Garnavillo has lost another good, faithful citizen and sturdy pioneer. The best of us must die, and if after we are dead those who remain can think naught but good of us, then the mission that God has given us has been fulfilled.
Burial in the Garnavillo cemetery.
