Mrs. Sophia Buckman, nee Tuchner, was born in Oldenburg, Germany, Nov. 9, 1809. She was married to Frederick Buckman in 1840. They emigrated to America in 1845 and landed in Baltimore, where they resided 8 months. Then they moved to Indiana, and in 1854 came to Clayton Co., where she has resided since.
Of the seven children that were born to them, four boys and two girls still live and all reside in Clayton county. During the last years of her life Mrs. Buckman has lived with her daughter, Mrs. F. Otting, where she died January 8, 1895, inst. of the weakness consequent on old age. She leaves six children, twenty-five grandchildren, and one great grandchild to mourn her death. She was buried January 10, 1895 in the Garnavillo cemetery.

Mrs. Buckman, the mother of Mrs. Fred Otting and Henry of McGregor, and Aug. Buckman of Read, died at 2 o'clock Tuesday morning at the residence of Fred Otting.
