Justina Otting Schulte

Justina Schorsina Schulte was born in Hanover, Germany, July 22, 1845, the fifth child in a family of four boys and three girls, born to Herman and Mrs. Sophia (Schroeder) Otting. She died in the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. G. Bierbaum, McGregor, on the morning of Dec. 21, 1931, age 86 years, 4 month and 29 days. All of her brothers and sisters preceeded her in death, and each of the latter reached an old age.

In 1854 she emigrated, with her parents, to America, and lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, from the fall of that year until the spring of the next, when the family came to Clayton county, Iowa.

In 1862 she was united in marriage with J. H. Schulte. They started housekeeping in the J H Schulte farm, where she lived until the time of her death. In 1912 her husband was taken from her by death, and she has since then lived on the home farm with her daughter Mary and husband, where she received the tenderest of care.

She reared a family of eight children – five boys and three girls. Two of the boys, henry and Frederick, preceded her in death.

She was baptized in Germany and confirmed in Cere church by the Rev. Paul Stockfelt, April 22, 1859 (?), and remained a staunch member of the Lutheran church throughout her life-time.

The children surviving are: Herman, Manly, Iowa; William, Manly; August, Jefferson, Iowa; Mrs. Mary Bierbaum, McGregor; Mrs. Anna Denman, Denver, Colo.; Mrs. Louis Simmons, Detroit, Mich. She leaves 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
